6 SEO Strategies for Press Releases

This week’s “Ask a SEO Expert” question comes from Dave Marino who asks:

Are Press Releases Still an Effective Way for SEO and to Build Links?

Press Release Strategies

In my opinion yes, press releases are still worth the time and money post Google Penguin as long as you follow these 6 strategies that I will share with you.

PR Tip #1 – Avoid Bad Neighborhoods

In post Penguin one of your top concerns with all link build efforts is making sure that 7 Press Release Tipsyour links don’t end up in some bad neighborhood.

To avoid this you should only use reputable PR firms such as PRweb. PRWeb only publish  their releases to reputable media outlets.

PR Tip #2 – Avoid Duplicate Content

Google hates duplicate content!

With this in mind make sure that you have at least three different versions of your content. These versions should be 20 to 30% different:

  1. One you first publish on your site and then Google +
  2. One for your press release
  3. One for social media

PR Tip #3  – Anchor Tag Keyword Links

Do not keyword stuff or focus only keywords as links. You will be penalized for over-optimization.

Instead focus on SEO branding signals of your company and/or products, which include:

  • The name of your company
  • The full URL to your website
  • Your address and telephone number

PR Tip #4 – Embrace Google Authorship

Google Authorship is becoming one of the leading factors used by Google to determine the ranking of your site, so start embracing it today!

Include your image, name and Google’s authorship tags into your byline, your articles and your site.

PR Tip #5 – Write For the Journalist

Your ultimate goal in publishing your press release is encouraging journalists to pick up the phone and call you for more information.

For an example, I did a press in 2004 offering a $50,000 reward to prove that a competitors product worked as they advertised for my RadarJammer.com website.

My phone rang for months as CBS Good Morning, American Journal, WWOR-TV and even 60 Minutes picked up on this release.

Today this site is still #1 in Google for it’s main money keyword terms because of it.

So write interesting and engaging articles with this goal in mind.

PR Tip #6 – Focus On The New Media

The new PR websites are social media sites so focus most of your attention on them.

After you publish your article engage your audience on:

  • Google +
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • YouTube
  • LinkedIn
