What’s Google Panda Update All About?
If you promote your business online you need to become familiar with some of the recent Google algorithm changes, specifically the Google Panda update.
Well face it; Google controls the Internet through their search engine.
Today Google controls over 64.2 of the U.S. search market with over 1 billion search queries made each day worldwide.
Google uses a formula called an algorithm to rank your website.
The most significant change Google has made to their algorithm was back in February of 2011 calling it the Panda Update.
And every day Google makes a number of refinements to this Panda Update as an example in February 2012 alone they made over 40 changes to their Google Panda algorithm.
So why does Google make so many changes their algorithm?
Well one of Google’s main goals is to provide their users with the most relevant information available and to quote Eric Schmidt, the CEO and Founder of Google:
“The internet is fast becoming a cesspool where false information thrives. Brands are the solution, not the problem. Brands are how you sort out the cesspool.”
So Google’s Panda updates are basically updates to their algorithm to flush out the spammy results from their search results.
So essentially to have your website rank well post Panda there are only 2 things you need to concern yourself with:
- The number and quality of the backlinks to your website
- The quality of the content on your website

Why Do Backlinks Matter?
Who links to your website and your social mentions in social media and what and who you link to from your site plays a very important factor in the ranking of your website and is one of the first factors of onsite SEO and offsite SEO.
One of the most important factors of Onsite SEO is having the proper website architecture and how you interlink your own properties together.
Next is who you link out to from your website.
By linking out to other relevant and authoritative sites in your niche to helping build your relevancy.
However, if you link out to what is called a link farm, your site could be banished from Google’s index.
Offsite SEO is basically who links to your website.
The more relevant and authoritative links your site has from others increases your authority and your rankings.
How Does Google Measure My Content?
Right now you maybe asking, ok how does Google measure the quality of my content?
Well Google already has tons of information and metrics stored in its database that it uses to compare the content on your website against the content of your competitors.
So through artificial intelligence Google’s first compares the content through a process called Latent Semantic Indexing or LSI.
So How Does This LSI Stuff Work?
Well if you want to be geeky about it Wikipedia has the full mathematical equation here
But in layman’s terms basically Google is looking for related words or themes to build phrase relationships.
So if your website is about Search Engine Optimization Training like ours which is currently ranked as the #2 website for SEO Training, it maybe looking for related themes or words like:
- Keyword Research
- Quality Content
- Google Plus
- Search Engine Optimization training
- SEO Workshops
- Certified SEO Training
How Do I Do Latent Semantic Indexing?
Well there are two ways, both of which we go into much more detail in our Basic and Advanced SEO Training.
This is a process that I developed and I call Google Eyes.
Basically once you know and understand on how Google ranks websites you would type in the keyword phrase you wish to rank for into Google search engine and using a fresh pair of “Google Eyes” mine keyword phrases from the results.
You would then repeat this entire process using other search engines such as Ask, Bing and even Amazon and compile the results into a spread sheet.
SEO Scout is a computer program that really speeds up the process of mining keyword phrases.
Michael Marshall who has advanced degrees in Linguistics, Semantics, Mathematics and Engineering developed SEO Scout.
What SEO Scout does is compare the content on your site to the top 100 sites ranked in Google and complies the keyword phrases you would need on your site ranked in the order of importance.
