Connect with Your Perfect Customer Using LinkedIn

I don’t get it, why should I use Social Media in my business? Isn’t all that social media stuff about posting about what my friends or I are doing?

If this is how you view social media then you’re really missing out of a great Social Media Business opportunity to not only promote your business, but also a great opportunity to network with other business professionals in your niche.

In this week’s SEO tip of the week we will discuss using LinkedIn as a professional marketing tool.

Today you may be using LinkedIn as a place to post your online resume or as a way to establish casual contacts or chit chats. Well that is a great start but there is so much more.

When you use LinkedIn the correct way you will create a direct pipeline to your perfect customer who is searching for your products and/or services.

However if you treat LinkedIn as just being another MySpace, Facebook or Twitter you will miss out on this opportunity and I can assure you that no one will want to connect with your LinkedIn profile.

Plain and simple, LinkedIn is about business used by business professionals like CEO’s, Human Resource Directors and Major Decision Makers which can therefore mean more potential clients and referrals for your business.

In this SEO Tip of the Week you will discover on how you can;

  • Get yourself ready to sign up for a LinkedIn account
  • How to sign up for a LinkedIn account if you don’t have one now
  • Tips in developing your LinkedIn Profile
  • How to join groups
  • How to find connections
  • And of course, how to find your perfect customer

Today only a small percentage of people use LinkedIn effectively to market themselves or their business, so this means that there are great opportunities for you!

But you got to do it right!

The one major reason to being on LinkedIn is to get noticed by professionals.

Therefore we need to have our LinkedIn profile reflect who you are, what you do, and why they should do business with YOU!

So it defeats the entire purpose if you use a different name or upload some funny image as your avatar or even worse, lie or even fudge about your background or skills because it will come back to haunt you later on.

Before we begin I will take a moment of your time to review some of the basic guidelines about LinkedIn.

  • Respect – Don’t let your ego get involved and this is not about trying to knock out your competitor.
  • Invitations – Always accept invitations, invitations are connections
  • Meet Your Local Connections – If you have connections that are local to your business that sign up consider meeting with them personally
  • Complete your profile – Fill out everything, make sure that it is 100% Complete
  • It’s Not a Resume – Your LinkedIn profile is NOT your online resume but an online sales page selling your most important commodity, YOU. So treat it as such

Tip One – Keyword Research

The foundation of SEO is doing Keyword Research, same here with LinkedIn.

Any basic keyword research tool will work fine such as the Google Keyword Tool or Market Samurai.

First develop a list of about 10 to 20 keywords about you. Perhaps you’re involved as I am in Internet Marketing so you would have words such as;

  • Internet Marketing
  • SEO Consulting
  • Link Building

If you’re an electrician some of the words would be electrician, electrical contractor.

This is important because potential clients will use keyword phrases to search for your products and/or services using these keywords.

Then consider developing a list of 10 to 20 keywords about your perfect customer, the one person that your business will target. But before you do this think about who your perfect customer is, what they are doing, even what they maybe wearing and what keywords they are typing into Google to look for your products and/or services.

Basic keyword research is a little different than if you’re doing keyword research for your website, therefore;

  • Don’t worry about your competition
  • Don’t bother with long tail keywords, select the keywords that have the most traffic and are the most profitable

After you have developed your keyword list merge them into your LinkedIn Profile.

However please don’t start spamming your LinkedIn profile by stuffing it with useless keywords.

Tip Two – Your Perfect Customer Avatar

If you have been following our SEO training videos and blog on you know that I have always emphasized that you only have one perfect customer and that you should know this ONE PERFECT CUSTOMER intimately

Same thing when developing your customer avatar for your LinkedIn account.

Start with the general demographic of your perfect audience;

  • Male or Female
  • What is their age
  • Are they Married or Single
  • What is their income

Try to identify everything about them you can, and then close your eyes. Now lets say out of this entire demographic audience that just one was your perfect customer and they walked into your office right now;

  • What is their ONE most pressing problem and what services or products can you provide that can solve it.

Tip Three- Supporting Accounts

Next step you will need to create other online accounts that will support your LinkedIn account.

The first account that you will want to set-up if you already do not have one is a Gmail account.

Then you will want to export your email contacts into your Gmail account and then edit it by removing any contacts that you don’t want to export into your LinkedIn account.

Some other accounts that you will want to set-up include;

  • Gmail
  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • YouTube

You should also have a website that you can drive your potential clients to. This can be something as simple as a free WordPress blog or a full-blown e-commerce website.

Remember, all your supporting accounts should portray the professional image that you are promoting on your LinkedIn account.

Tip Four – Join LinkedIn and Get Involved

If you already have a LinkedIn account use it, because you never want to set up multiple LinkedIn accounts.

Once you have set-up your LinkedIn account go out and look for people that you already have a relationship with and add them to your account and don’t forget to write them a recommendation that they would be proud to hang up on their wall!
