SEO Essentials – Core SEO

Whether you’re developing your very first website or you’re an old pro, it can sometimes feel like an overwhelming experience.

However, there are lots of tools, resources and people out there (if you know where to find them) that will make the task of creating and then optimizing your website a lot easier.

One of the first choices you’ll need to make is what platform your new website will be using.

One platform that has become very popular today is WordPress, in-fact our website SEO Training SW uses this platform.

  • WordPress is FREE!
  • Very easy to setup
  • Easy to learn
  • Lots of templates and plugins that you can use on your site
  • Templates can be easily modified
  • Large open source community
  • Easy hosting options

Some Disadvantages:

  • WordPress is not a full CMS product, which is ok for many websites. However if you have a large e-commerce website WordPress may not be the right choice
  • If your site becomes very large, the database queries may start to take more time
  • Hackers love WordPress sites, be sure to update your program often and have the latest security measures in place
  • Lots of the themes look similar to one in other

Research and Determine the Keywords you Will use

After you determined the platform you will be using, the next step is identifying the keywords that you will be using on your website.

One important facet in identifying your keywords is to know what the OCI, or commercial intent of these keywords.

Here is an example from my days selling radar detectors on RadarBusters.

The keyword “radar detectors” has a very low OCI value in that it is more of a market defining keyword. When people type in this term they are looking for general information about radar detectors.

However when someone types in the phrase “Escort 9500CI Radar Detector” they are looking for a very specific model of radar detector, thus the OCI is very high as it is a buying term.

MSN has a free tool that you can use to identify your keywords OCI value here:

However, I chose Market Samurai as one of my main keywords tools which also performs OCI analysis and saves me a tremendous amount of time.

You can test out Market Samurai for free for 30 days by clicking here.

Content Is King!

I’m sure you’re tired of hearing this time and time again, but it is one of the most important phrases in Internet Marketing.

“Content is King, Context is Queen”

The information on your website is its content and the more useful and interesting the content is the more successful your website will become. This is because more and more people will want to visit it and read your content and the search engine spiders will index it.

So now that you know that content is king, do you know what good content is? Here are a few guidelines:

  • Make sure it appeals to your core target audience or even better, your perfect customer
  • Make sure that it is original! Your visitors and Google HATE duplicate content
  • Use your own personality and flavor when writing your content, make it feel as it is coming from your heart and soul
  • Make sure that your content is easy to read and understand. Use a spell checker (one of my biggest faults is that I suck at spelling)
  • Write articles about news in your industry and insider tips

Keyword Optimization

After you write your content then edit it for keyword optimization.

So many copywriters start with optimizing their content for the search engines before they optimize it for the reader, this is a huge mistake!

After I write my content I use one of Michael Marshal’s tools, SEO Scout.

Michael is an associate of ours with the Search Engine Academy and Michael’s program will analyze the keyword theme of my content compared to the top 100 websites already indexed in Google for my seed keyword term.

After I run SEO Scout I then do a MILD rewrite of my content using the theme that Michael’s program suggests.

Analyze the Competition

It is not only a good idea to know what the OCI is of you Money or Market defining keywords in your particular industry; it is also a good idea to do research on the websites that are currently ranking on top based on these certain keywords.

You should know what websites are considered authority sites for a particular keyword and be able to identify their strong points and weak points.

Michael Marshal to the rescue again!

Michael has developed a program called SEORecon

SEORecon will pick apart your competitors websites where you will know and understand the entire landscape of what important factors are for your niche.

You can watch a full video here on the benefits of using SEORecon.

Use Keywords in the Link Building Process

Knowing what keywords your competitors are ranking for will help you in your overall link building process.

Web developers can get a significant amount of relevant backlinks from these authority websites, something critical in all especially for start link building endeavors.

Use Your Own Assets

Are you using the assets that you already have available to you in your back linking strategy such as using your own website to build links?

Onsite SEO is a very important factor in building up the reputation of your website and it is so often overlooked.

Also build upon the content of your website and connect the important keyword phrases in your content to other relevant pages on your own website.

Here are just a few ideas that you can use to building up your on site content;

  • Interview with CEO or employees of your company
  • Top ten most frequently asked questions your customers ask
  • Testimonials from your clients and/or customers

Do Article and Guest Writing

Writing and posting articles on article websites, other blogs and directories is a powerful tool to build back links to your website and create branding for your company and/or product.

Also consider writing a press release about something happening in your industry and submitting them to PRweb or other news services.
